A clutch in a model's hand, where its size makes sense.

A clutch has no strap to explain it; it is held, and its size only reads next to a hand. Herofab puts the clutch in the hand of a studio model, and the brief is to keep the frame or flap, the clasp and the surface, whether that is satin, beading or a metallic finish.

Worth knowing

What an evening bag asks of the image.

  1. 1

    Frame, flap or envelope fold

A hard box clutch, a kiss-lock frame and a soft envelope are three different objects. The outline is briefed to stay as photographed. Check the corners, the line where a flap ends and the two knobs of a frame clasp, which are small enough to merge into one.

  2. 2

    Satin, beads, sequins and metal

Evening materials are all about reflection: satin has a broad sheen, a metallic finish mirrors its surroundings, beads and sequins are hundreds of tiny highlights. Dense surfaces like these are worth viewing at full size, row by row, against the clutch itself.

  3. 3

    Size in the hand

The hand holding a clutch is the ruler a buyer uses. See that the clutch is neither longer than a forearm nor lost in the palm when the real one is neither, and that a fine chain, if the product has one, was not thickened into a shoulder strap.

Photographing a clutch without glare.

  • Stand the clutch on its base, clasp closed and front toward the camera; a soft pouch can lie flat with the flap side up.
  • Tuck an optional chain inside if the image should show a hand-held clutch, or lay it in a neat loop beside the clutch if the chain belongs in the picture.
  • Use daylight from the side instead of the phone flash, which burns out satin and sequins, and take a close-up of the clasp.
Questions

Virtual try-on for clutches, answered.

Is a clutch shown in the hand or under the arm?

The model carries it, and clutch is one of the bag categories in the app's list; choosing it states that the product has no shoulder strap. Look at the grip in the result: the fingers should not cover the clasp or a logo that buyers need to see.

How closely can a buyer zoom in on beadwork?

Images are delivered in 2K, or 4K as an option, and Herofab is briefed to keep the material of the product. Beadwork is a dense pattern, so compare a few rows in the delivered file with the same rows on the clutch. Adding a detail close-up to the upload gives the pattern a sharper reference.

Which background suits a metallic clutch?

Studio white and studio grey keep attention on the product, and grey gives a silver or mirrored finish more contrast than white does. Lifestyle and outdoor backgrounds, or the seller's own image, are also available. After changing the background, compare the colour of the metal with the real clutch.
