Shoulder bags on the shoulder, strap drop included.

A shoulder bag is defined by its strap: the drop decides how high the bag rides when it is carried over one shoulder. Herofab shows the bag carried over a studio model's shoulder and is briefed to keep the strap, the closure and the metal fittings as the source photo records them.

Worth knowing

What a shoulder-bag image is read for.

  1. 1

    Strap drop and resting height

The drop is the distance from the top of the strap's arc to the upper edge of the bag, and it decides how high the bag rides against the body. Hold the product on a shoulder beside the screen: the bag in the image should rest at a comparable height, with the strap neither stretched nor shortened.

  2. 2

    Flap or zip top

Carried on the shoulder, the top edge of the bag faces the viewer more than the base does. A flap should cover as much of the front as on the product and end in the same curve or point; a zip top should run the full width with its pull at the correct end. Herofab is briefed to keep the closure as photographed.

  3. 3

    Hardware along the strap

Many shoulder bags carry their metal on the strap: a chain section, a buckle that adjusts the length, rings where strap and body join. Check that the finish stayed gold, silver or gunmetal as on the bag, that a chain section did not become leather, and that the strap meets the body at both ends.

Source photo

Photographing a shoulder bag with its strap raised.

  • Hang the bag by its strap from a hook or a hanger so the strap forms its natural arc above the body, and photograph the front panel straight on.
  • Close the flap or the zip and fill the bag lightly, so a soft crescent or hobo shape keeps the curve it has when carried.
  • Leave the whole arc of the strap in the picture, and add a close-up when the buckle, the chain or a logo on the closure is small.
Questions

Virtual try-on for shoulder bags, answered.

How does a shoulder bag differ from a tote or a crossbody in the app?

Each is a separate entry in the category list, and the seller picks the one that matches the product. Bags are carried, not worn: a shoulder bag is shown over one shoulder, a crossbody across the body, a clutch in the hand. Choose shoulder bag for a short-strap style, then compare the result with the real bag.

Will a slouchy hobo keep its curved shape?

Herofab is briefed to keep the shape of the product, and the shape it reads is the one in the photo. A soft leather hobo photographed empty on a table is recorded as flat. Fill it lightly and hang it by the strap for the source; afterwards compare the dip of the top edge and the fullness of the base with the bag itself.

Which pose shows a shoulder bag clearly?

A standing or three-quarter pose keeps the bag at the model's side with its front panel towards the camera. Arms crossed and hands on hips move the elbow, which can cover the flap. Several poses of the same model can be ordered together, so one image can present the bag and another the whole look.
