Necklaces worn, where they fall on the neckline.

Buyers of a necklace want to know where it lands: at the base of the throat, on the collarbone or lower on the chest. Herofab shows the necklace around the neck of a studio model, framed close up, and is briefed to keep the chain, the pendant and the colour of the metal.

Worth knowing

What a necklace image has to answer.

  1. 1

Chain length and where it falls

A choker, a collarbone-length chain and a long pendant chain are worn at different heights. Compare the fall in the image with the real necklace on a person, and write the length in the listing, since the image is a guide and not a measurement.

  2. 2

    Pendant and how it hangs

The pendant should hang from the same bail or ring as on the product, face forward and sit at the centre of the chain. Look for a pendant that has been flipped, doubled or attached by a link the real piece does not have.

  3. 3

    Chain pattern and clasp

Cable, curb, snake, rope and beaded strands each have a rhythm that should survive from clasp to clasp. Worn, the clasp belongs at the back of the neck; if it or an extender chain shows at the front of the image, order a new one.

Photographing a necklace at full length.

  • Lay the necklace on a plain, matte surface in an open loop or a clean drop shape, clasp closed, with no part of the chain crossing another.
  • Keep the whole length in the frame, clasp and extender included; a chain coiled into a pile gives no length to read.
  • Turn the pendant face up and flat, and add a close-up of it when it carries stones, enamel or engraved lettering.
Questions

Virtual try-on for necklaces, answered.

How do I show a long chain and a short one from the same range?

Each necklace is its own upload and its own image. Using one ready-made or saved model for the whole range lets buyers compare where each length falls on the same person, which a mix of different models would hide.

Do fine chains come through in the result?

Herofab is briefed to keep the piece as photographed, and thin links are among the details that call for a careful look. Open the 2K or 4K file at full size and follow the chain from one side of the neck to the other for breaks, doubled strands or links that changed shape.

Does a pendant with a name or initial stay legible?

Lettering on a pendant is small text, the first thing to check on any delivered image. Upload a sharp close-up of the pendant with the main photo, then read the name in the result letter by letter before the image is published.
