Glasses on a face, close enough to read the frame.

Optical frames are chosen by looking at a face, not at a tray. Herofab puts the pair on a studio model in a close frame and is briefed to keep the rim shape, the colour, the bridge and the temple arms, with the lenses left clear.

Worth knowing

What a glasses image is judged on.

  1. 1

    Frame shape and rim

Round, rectangular, cat-eye, aviator, rimless: the outline is the product, and the thickness of the rim is part of it. Compare both lens openings with the real pair; they should be the same shape as each other and as the frame in hand.

  2. 2

    Bridge, nose pads and hinges

The centre of the frame holds its smallest parts: a keyhole or saddle bridge, metal pad arms, rivets and hinges at the corners. These are the places to zoom in on, together with any lettering on the inside or outside of a temple arm.

  3. 3

    Clear lenses

Prescription frames are sold with clear lenses, so the eyes should be visible through them and the lens should carry no colour it does not have. Check for a tint that has crept in and for reflections strong enough to hide the eye.

Photographing glasses on a plain surface.

  • Open both temple arms and stand the glasses upright on a matte, single-colour surface, the front of the frame square to the camera.
  • Work beside a window with the flash off; clear lenses mirror ceiling lights and the phone, and a bright patch on the lens can be mistaken for part of the product.
  • Show the whole pair, from one temple tip to the other, with no hand holding it, and add a close-up when a logo sits on the temple arm.
Questions

Virtual try-on for glasses, answered.

Are the lenses of optical frames shown clear or tinted?

As photographed. Eyeglasses and sunglasses are separate categories in the app, so optical frames should be uploaded under the one for clear lenses. Before publishing, confirm that the lenses in the image are as transparent as the demo lenses in the real pair.

Does the image show how wide the frame is on a face?

It shows the frame on a synthetic model's face, which helps a buyer judge the style. It is not a fitting: lens width, bridge width and temple length belong in the listing text, where a buyer can compare them with a pair they already own.

Can thin metal or rimless frames be used?

Yes, and they deserve the closest check. A wire rim, a rimless mount and a slim temple arm are fine edges; Herofab is briefed to keep them, but they are the parts to inspect at full size, ideally in the 4K file.
