Tote bags at carrying height, printed panel in view.

A tote is a simple construction: two panels, an open top and a pair of long handles. That simplicity leaves the handle length, the stiffness of the material and the artwork on the panel to do the selling, and Herofab is briefed to keep all three when it shows the tote carried by a studio model.

Worth knowing

Where a tote image earns its place.

  1. 1

    Handle length and attachment

Long handles let a tote hang from the shoulder; short ones keep it in the hand. Compare the handles in the result with the product, then look at where they meet the panel: stitched in a cross, riveted, or running down the front as one continuous band of webbing.

  2. 2

Canvas that folds, leather that stands

An unlined cotton tote creases and hangs soft, while a structured leather one holds its corners and its flat base. The material is briefed to stay as photographed. Check that a soft tote was not stiffened into a box and that a rigid one did not slump.

  3. 3

    Artwork on the panel

Many totes are bought for the print: a slogan, an illustration, a shop logo. Where the tool can match the artwork it carries the real print over; where it cannot, the print is redrawn. Read every word of a slogan and compare the line weight of a drawing before the image is published.

Photographing a tote flat or hanging.

  • Lay a canvas tote on a plain surface with the printed side up, smooth out the fold lines left by shipping, and arrange both handles in an arc above the opening.
  • Hang a structured tote from a hook by both handles, or stand it on its base with a book inside, so the panel faces the camera square on.
  • Shoot from directly opposite the centre of the panel; a tilted phone turns a rectangular tote into a trapezoid and stretches the print with it.
Questions

Virtual try-on for tote bags, answered.

Will the text printed on my tote be spelled correctly?

Lettering is where a redrawn print shows first, so read the text on the delivered image letter by letter. Matched artwork comes straight from the source photo. A sharp, evenly lit photo and a close-up of small type give the tool a clearer reference to work from.

Should the tote be photographed empty or filled?

Photograph it the way it should be seen. An empty canvas tote lies flat and shows its print without distortion; a structured tote keeps its form with light filling. Avoid items poking out of the open top: the source should show one product, and whatever overlaps the top edge hides part of the tote.

Can a tote with a different design on each side show both?

Upload the leading design as the required front photo and add the other side as the back photo, so the second design has its own reference. A panel that appears in no photo cannot be reproduced faithfully. Decide which design leads the listing and photograph that one as the front.
