Beanies pulled onto a model, rib, cuff and label on show.

A beanie is a knitted tube that takes its form only when a head fills it. Herofab puts it on the head of a studio model, and the brief covers the rib, the turn-up cuff, a woven label and a pom-pom as the photo shows them, along with the colour of the yarn.

Worth knowing

What a knitted hat shows when worn.

  1. 1

    Rib and stitch

Fine rib, chunky fisherman rib, cable or plain jersey: the stitch is the texture a buyer is choosing. The columns of rib should run straight up toward the crown and draw together where the knit is decreased. Compare the gauge with the beanie; the image should not show a finer or a coarser knit than the product.

  2. 2

    Cuff, label and pom-pom

A folded cuff doubles the knit and carries the woven label or leather patch at the front. Herofab is briefed to keep logos and trims; read the small lettering on the label first. A pom-pom, in yarn or faux fur, has a soft outline that deserves a look against the background.

  3. 3

    How far down it sits

Pulled low over the ears, worn at the hairline or slouched at the back, one beanie reads as three styles. Check that the depth of the hat in the image suits its real depth, that a cuffless beanie has not been given a fold, and that a short fisherman style has not been lengthened.

Source photo

Photographing a beanie laid flat.

  • Lay the beanie on a plain surface in a contrasting colour, cuff folded to the depth it is worn at and the label centred toward the camera.
  • Shape it into a smooth dome by hand and pick off lint; pilling and loose fibres are recorded as part of the knit.
  • Fluff the pom-pom and keep it inside the frame with space above it, then add a close-up of the label or of a cable pattern.
Questions

Virtual try-on for beanies, answered.

Is the beanie shown cuffed or uncuffed?

As photographed. The cuff belongs to the shape, which is briefed to stay as it is in the source, so fold it before the photo if the hat is sold cuffed, and leave it down if it is sold as a long slouch style. A beanie meant to be worn both ways needs two source photos and two images.

Does a faux-fur pom-pom keep its soft outline?

Fine edges such as hair and fringe are the details to inspect first, and a fur pom-pom is all edge. Herofab is briefed to keep it. Look at its outline on the delivered image, above all on studio white behind a pale pom-pom, and switch to studio grey if the edge needs more contrast.

Can a beanie be shown against a winter backdrop?

The outdoor locations include a city street and a garden, and the light can be set to overcast or morning. For a snow or mountain scene, the seller's own image can be used as the background. Studio white and studio grey remain the plain options for a catalogue view.
