Jeans standing on their own, waistband open.

Jeans in a ghost-mannequin image are shown as a hollow shape: the waistband forms an open oval and the legs hold the volume of a worn pair. Herofab builds that from a flat-lay or hanger photo and is briefed to keep the wash, the stitching and the rivets.

Worth knowing

What denim has to keep.

  1. 1

    Waistband, fly and rise

The open waist shows the inside of the waistband at the back, which the tool renders when the photo does not include it. On the outside, check the waistband button, the fly, the belt loops and the rise: high, mid and low rise must stay distinguishable.

  2. 2

Leg shape down to the hem

Skinny, straight, bootcut, wide and tapered differ by a small change of width at knee and hem. Compare the outline of the result with the pair laid flat. A raw, cuffed or split hem should end the leg as it does on the garment.

  3. 3

    Wash, whiskers and stitching

Fades, whiskers at the hip, distressing and contrast topstitching are the identity of a pair of jeans. Herofab is briefed to keep them and the colour of the wash; rivets, the coin pocket and lettering on a waistband patch need a zoomed check.

Laying out jeans for the source photo.

  • Lay the jeans flat, front up, with the button and fly closed and the legs slightly apart so the inseam is visible up to the crotch.
  • Smooth the legs to their full length and unroll the hems unless the cuff is how the pair is sold; never cross one leg over the other.
  • Turn the pair over for a back photo: back pockets, yoke and patch are what the back view is made from.
Questions

Ghost mannequin for jeans, answered.

Do the back pockets and the leather patch show?

They belong to the back view, which needs its own photo of the back of the jeans. Pocket stitching is briefed to stay as photographed. Lettering on a leather or paper patch is small text, so read it on the result before publishing.

Can jeans be photographed folded in half?

No. A pair folded leg on leg hides one whole leg, and a part hidden in a fold cannot be added back faithfully. Unfold the jeans and show both legs side by side, from waistband to hem, in a single straight-on photo.

Is a flat lay enough for denim, or is the 3D shape needed?

Both are offered. The 3D shape gives the waist an opening and the legs some roundness, which helps a buyer read the cut. The flat-lay style shows the same cut as a clean outline and suits rigid or wide-leg denim that looks natural lying flat.
