Trousers with a pressed line, shown hollow.

Trousers are chosen for their drape: how the cloth falls from the waistband, where the pleat opens and how the leg ends at the hem. From a clip-hanger or flat-lay photo, Herofab delivers them as a 3D hollow shape with the waist open, or as a clean flat lay.

Worth knowing

Where trousers show their cut.

  1. 1

    Waistband and closure

A tailored waistband may carry a hook and bar, an extended tab, side adjusters or belt loops; a casual one may be elasticated with a drawstring. The tool is briefed to keep the closure as photographed. Check it, and the inside of the waistband that the open waist reveals.

  2. 2

Pleats, darts and the centre crease

Front pleats and a pressed crease run the length of the leg and tell the buyer how formal the trousers are. Look for the same number of pleats on each side and a crease that runs straight to the hem instead of fading at the knee.

  3. 3

    Pockets and hem finish

Slant pockets, jetted back pockets and a turn-up or plain hem are small, flat details that are easy to lose on dark cloth. Compare them with the garment, and choose a backdrop that contrasts with the fabric so the pocket edges stay readable.

Source photo

Source photos for trousers.

  • Clip the trousers by the waistband with the front facing the camera, hook closed and zip up, so the legs hang free without twisting.
  • If they are laid flat instead, align the creases at the front of each leg and keep both hems level and inside the frame.
  • Photograph the back for welt pockets and darts, and take a close-up of the cloth when it is a fine stripe, a check or a twill.
Questions

Ghost mannequin for trousers, answered.

Will the pressed crease stay sharp in the result?

The crease is part of the shape Herofab is briefed to keep, and it has to be visible in the source to be carried over. Press the trousers and light them from the front; a crease lost in shadow or in wrinkles gives the tool little to follow.

Which backdrop makes navy or charcoal trousers readable?

White, grey or beige all separate dark suiting from the ground; the black backdrop is the one to avoid for navy and charcoal. Beige sits warmly behind wool and flannel, and white matches a catalogue whose other images are on white.

Are elasticated or drawstring waists handled differently?

The style choice is the same, but the source matters more. Lay the waistband unstretched and flat so its gathers are even, and let the drawstring hang in front with both ends visible. Gathers and cord are then part of what the tool is briefed to keep.
