Shirts with a standing collar, and no mannequin.

A shirt is judged by its collar, its placket and its cuffs. From a hanger or flat-lay photo, Herofab delivers the shirt with a 3D invisible-mannequin shape or as a clean flat lay, on a white, grey, black or beige backdrop.

Worth knowing

What a shirt image has to show.

  1. 1

    Collar stand and inside neck

In a hollow-body image the collar stands up and the inside of the neck is open to view. A hanger photo rarely shows the inner yoke, so the tool renders that area; look at the collar points and the back of the neckband before publishing.

  2. 2

    Placket and button count

Herofab is briefed to keep the placket, the buttons and the chest pocket as photographed. Count the buttons on the result against the shirt itself, and confirm that a button-down collar still has its two small collar buttons.

  3. 3

    Cuffs, stripes and checks

Sleeves end in cuffs with their own buttons and a sleeve placket, all of them small in the frame. On striped or checked cloth, compare the pattern across the front opening and over the pocket, where a fine pattern is hardest to carry.

Source photo

Photographing a shirt as the source.

  • Button the shirt to the top, or to the button it is normally worn at, and place it on a hanger so both shoulders sit level.
  • Pull the sleeves out to the sides or let them hang straight, with both cuffs inside the frame and no sleeve tucked behind the body.
  • Add a photo of the back for a yoke or a box pleat, and a close-up of the collar or of chest embroidery when the detail is small.
Questions

Ghost mannequin for shirts, answered.

Should the shirt be buttoned or open in the photo?

Buttoned is the safer choice for a shirt sold as a shirt: the placket lies straight and the collar keeps its form. A shirt hanging open covers part of one front panel with the other, and the covered part is exactly what the result cannot copy.

Does a creased shirt need ironing first?

A quick press helps. The tool is briefed to keep the fabric as it appears, so a hard crease across the chest may be read as part of the cloth. A smooth front and a flat collar give the hollow-body shape a cleaner starting point.

Which backdrop suits a white shirt?

A white shirt on a white backdrop relies on soft shading at its edges to stay readable. Grey or beige gives the outline more contrast, while white fits a catalogue that is on white throughout. The backdrop is chosen per image, so both versions can be made.
