Hoodies that hold their shape, hood included.

A hoodie hanging from a hook collapses: the hood drops and the body loses its width. Herofab turns that hanger or flat-lay photo into a hollow-body image in which the hood has volume and the rib hem closes the body at the bottom.

Worth knowing

Where a hoodie image is judged.

  1. 1

    Hood volume and lining

The hood is the largest part of the neck area, and in a 3D image it opens towards the camera, so its lining is on show. If the lining is a contrast colour or a different jersey, include it in the source photo; otherwise the tool renders the inside from what it can see.

  2. 2

    Kangaroo pocket and drawcords

The pouch pocket, its two hand openings and the drawcords with their tips and eyelets are the details a buyer zooms in on. Herofab is briefed to keep them; compare the cord length and the metal eyelets with the garment before the image goes live.

  3. 3

Rib hem, cuffs and chest print

Rib at the hem and cuffs gathers the fleece, and the result should show that gathering instead of a straight tube. A chest logo or a large print is briefed to stay as photographed; small lettering under a logo deserves a close look.

Source photo

Shooting a hoodie for the hollow-body look.

  • Lay the hoodie flat with the hood spread open above the shoulders, or hang it and lift the hood so its edge is not folded into the neck.
  • Leave the drawcords hanging at equal length and close a zip-up hoodie fully, with the zip pull visible.
  • Photograph the back as well when the hood or the back panel carries a print; the back view is made from that second photo.
Questions

Ghost mannequin for hoodies, answered.

Does the hood look flat when the source is a flat lay?

The 3D invisible-mannequin style is meant to give the hood and the body volume, even from a photo taken flat from above. What a flat photo cannot show, such as the depth of the hood lining, is rendered by the tool, so compare that area with the real garment.

Can a zip-up hoodie be shown half open?

The result follows the photo. If the zip is half open in the source, the tool is briefed to keep it that way, and the opening shows the inside of the hoodie as the tool reads it. For a calm catalogue image, a fully closed zip is the simpler source.

Is a hoodie clearer as a 3D shape or as a flat lay?

Heavy fleece with a hood usually reads more clearly as a 3D shape, because the hood needs depth. The flat-lay style suits oversized or cropped cuts, where the width of the body and the drop of the shoulder are what the listing describes.
