Shorts on a model, length shown as it is.

With shorts the question is always how far down the thigh they reach. Herofab dresses a studio model in the pair from a single photo, so the listing shows length, hem and waistband on a body instead of on a table.

Worth knowing

The details shorts are bought on.

  1. 1

    Inseam and leg opening

A brief running pair, a mid-thigh chino and a knee-length bermuda are different products. The proportion of leg to waistband is taken from the photo, so shoot the pair fully spread. Afterwards, see that the hem lands where the real garment would at the size you picked.

  2. 2

    Hem finish

A turned-up cuff, a raw frayed edge, a curved runner's hem with a side split or a plain stitched hem each say something about the product. The edge is briefed to remain as photographed. Loose threads on a raw hem count as fine edges, and those deserve a zoom before the image is used.

  3. 3

    Waistband and closure

Elastic with a drawcord, a belted paperbag waist, or a fly with a button: the waistband is the widest part of a short garment and fills much of the picture. The model's upper body is dressed plainly so it stays in view. Confirm cord ends, eyelets and belt loops against the source.

How to shoot shorts for the source photo.

  • Lay the shorts flat with the waistband straight and the leg openings spread to their natural width; do not tuck one leg behind the other.
  • Fasten the button, close the zip and centre the drawcord, so the cord ends hang in front where the camera can record them.
  • For cargo or patch pockets, flatten each flap and consider a closer photo of one pocket, since a short leg leaves little room for detail.
Questions

Virtual try-on for shorts, answered.

Do printed shorts keep their pattern on the model?

The print is carried over from the photo where it can be matched, and redrawn where it cannot. On a small garment a large motif is cut by the fly and the side seams, so look at how the pattern meets at those lines and whether its scale agrees with the pair in your hands.

Which background suits a pair of shorts?

Studio white or studio grey keeps attention on cut and colour and suits a main image. Shorts are a warm-weather product, so the outdoor options, among them a city street, a garden, a wooden pier and seaside rocks, are useful for a further image in the same listing.

Is a sitting pose a good idea for shorts?

It answers something buyers want to know, which is how far the leg rides up when seated, and sitting is among the available poses. It also folds the fabric at the hip, so the pockets and the fly should be compared with the source photo. Let a standing image carry the true length.
