An abaya on a model, at its full length.

An abaya is defined by length, by the width of its sleeves and by the way a generous cut of cloth falls. Herofab dresses a studio model in it from one photo taken from shoulder to hem, and is briefed to keep the loose line and the work at the cuffs and front.

Worth knowing

What an abaya image must hold on to.

  1. 1

    Full length and loose cut

The garment should reach the length the real one reaches and stay loose through the body; an image that shortens it or draws it close to the figure misrepresents the product. Both are briefed to be kept. Start the review of every result with the hem and the width of the body.

  2. 2

    Sleeve width

Straight, bell, butterfly or kimono sleeves are a main point of difference between abayas. The width at the cuff and the length to the wrist are read from the photo, so the sleeves must be laid or hung fully open. Hold both cuffs of the delivered image up against the source.

  3. 3

    Embroidery, beading and trim

Work at the cuffs, down the front opening or along the hem is where the value of the piece sits, often tone on tone. Fine detail on dark cloth is easy to lose. A detail close-up gives the tool the motif at a readable size; afterwards, zoom in and compare motif by motif.

Photographing an abaya from shoulder to hem.

  • Hang it high, on a door or a tall rail, so the hem clears the floor and the whole length hangs straight in one frame.
  • Close an open-front abaya with its buttons, snaps or belt if that is how it is listed, or let both front edges hang parallel so the opening is clear.
  • Spread the sleeves away from the body so their width can be seen, and photograph black fabric in daylight against a pale wall so folds and embroidery separate from the background.
Questions

Virtual try-on for abayas, answered.

Can an open-front abaya be shown open?

The image follows the photo. An abaya photographed with its front edges apart is read as an open style, and one photographed fastened as a closed style. Decide which the listing should show and hang it that way. With an open front, look at what appears in the opening before publishing.

Does black embroidery on black fabric come out?

Tone-on-tone work is the hardest detail on this garment. It is briefed to be kept, and it depends on the photo recording it: use side light from a window so the stitching catches it, add a close-up of the cuff or the front panel, and study the delivered image at full size.

Which pose shows the drape and the sleeves?

Standing front shows the length and the fall of the cloth. Walking lets the hem move and shows the volume of a wide cut, and a three-quarter pose opens the sleeve to the camera. The same model can be ordered in each of these poses as a set.
