Products on linen, soft ground, sharp detail.

Linen is a quiet, matt ground: it takes the shine off a scene and lets metal and glass carry the light. Herofab places a product from a phone photo on linen cloth, at the angle chosen, and is briefed to keep the product as it appears in the source.

Worth knowing

What linen brings out and what it hides.

  1. 1

    Matt cloth, polished product

Against a matt weave, a polished case, a gemstone or a glass bottle becomes the only reflective thing in the frame. That draws the eye to it, and to any flaw in it. Zoom into the dial, the stone or the label and compare each with the product in hand.

  2. 2

Folds are part of the scene

Linen is rarely flat. Soft folds give the image depth, and a fold running behind a thin chain or a strap can swallow part of it. Trace a chain or a strap along its whole length on the result, link by link, to see that none of it is lost in the cloth.

  3. 3

    Textile on textile

A fabric product on a fabric ground needs a clear difference in colour or texture: a knitted hat or a silk scarf on natural linen can blur into it. For soft goods, wood, marble or a studio ground usually separates the product more clearly.

Photographing a product for a linen scene.

  • Lay a watch open and flat or close it around a small cushion, and photograph it from the front with the dial square to the camera.
  • Spread a necklace or a bracelet so the chain does not cross itself, and place earrings as a pair with both fully visible.
  • Shoot without flash in soft daylight; a hard reflection on a crystal or a polished stone hides exactly the detail a buyer zooms into.
Questions

Linen background product photos, answered.

What does the linen ground look like?

A plain linen cloth, drawn with the weave and the soft folds of real fabric. It is a neutral ground that suits gold, steel, leather and glass. A seller who needs one specific fabric or colour can upload their own background image and use that.

Is a top-down or a front view better on linen?

Top-down suits flat pieces laid on the cloth, such as a watch, a necklace or a compact, and shows the weave around them. A front or three-quarter view suits products that stand, such as a bottle or a jar, with the cloth falling away behind.

Can small engraved or printed text be trusted in the result?

It is the first thing to check. The product is briefed to stay unchanged, and very small lettering on a dial, a case back or a label is the hardest detail to hold. Read it on the delivered image at full size before it goes into a listing.
