Overcast light, for colour without hard shadows.

Cloud cover spreads daylight evenly: no hard shadows, no bright side and dark side, no warm cast. It is the least dramatic light and the most informative one. In Herofab, overcast is a light setting for location images; it replaces the scene's own light, and the garment is briefed to keep its colour and surface.

Worth knowing

What even light lets a buyer read.

  1. 1

    Colours close to the cloth

Without a low sun to tint it, a colour sits nearer to how the fabric looks by a window on a grey day. That helps shades that are hard to name, such as off-white, greige, teal and burgundy. It is still an image and not a swatch: set the garment beside the screen before the image goes live.

  2. 2

    Texture of knit and denim

Soft light reaches into a surface instead of skimming it. The ribs and cables of a knit, the twill line and fading of denim, the wale of corduroy stay visible across the whole garment and not on one lit side only. Zoom into the result and confirm the texture was kept and not smoothed into a flat tone.

  3. 3

    Black garments that keep detail

In hard sun a black piece splits into glare and solid shadow. Under cloud, seams, pockets, plackets and quilting stay readable on black, charcoal and navy. Search the result for those lines; if a black garment still reads as one dark shape, the source photo was probably too dark to begin with.

The source photo for an overcast image.

  • Photograph dark garments near a window with the light falling across the surface, and brighten the exposure until seams and pocket edges can be seen.
  • Lay knitwear flat without stretching it and let denim hang from the waistband, so the rib, the cable or the wash is recorded at its natural scale.
  • Leave the flash off: it flattens texture and puts a bright patch on the cloth that an even sky in the final image cannot explain.
Questions

Overcast-light fashion photos, answered.

Does overcast light make an image look dull?

It gives a flatter, calmer look: less contrast, softer shadows, no glow. For a product page that is often what is wanted, because the garment explains itself. When a set needs more mood, the same product can be ordered again in golden-hour or morning light, with the overcast image kept as the plainer reference.

Is overcast the same as a studio background?

No. Studio white and studio grey are plain backgrounds, and the light setting is not used on them. Overcast applies to location images, where it replaces the scene's own light: the garment is still shown on a street, a terrace, a pier or in a garden, only under an even sky.

Which locations work under an overcast sky?

Any of them: seaside rocks, a wooden pier, a city street, a Mediterranean village, a café terrace or a garden. A grey sky is at home on a street, and it takes the hard sun out of a village lane or a pier. Several poses of the same model can be ordered together, so a whole set shares one light.
