Your store's product images, scored out of 100.

Enter the address of a Shopify or WooCommerce store. The audit reads the store's public product catalogue, scores the product images on five measured rules and lists the three fixes that add the most points.

Audit a store.

The audit reads up to 250 products from the store's public catalogue: Shopify's products.json or the WooCommerce Store API. Only the first image of each product is loaded, as a small copy, in your browser. Nothing in the store is changed and no store login is needed.

How the score works

Five rules, each one measured.

Each product gets a score from 0 to 1 per rule. A rule's score is the average over the products it could be measured on; the total is the weighted average of the rules, out of 100.

RuleHow it is measuredWeight
Images per productNumber of images in the product's gallery. 4 or more scores 1; fewer scores images ÷ 4.25
Main image resolutionLonger side of the first image in pixels, as the store publishes it. 2,048 px or more scores 1; smaller scores the longer side ÷ 2,048.25
Main image backgroundEdge band of the first image (4% of the shorter side), read from a small copy. At least 90% white pixels (R, G and B 245 or more) scores 1; a plain non-white or transparent background scores 0.5; a mixed background scores 0.20
Consistent aspect ratioWidth ÷ height of each first image, compared with the most common ratio in the store. Within 2% scores 1, otherwise 0. Needs at least two measured products.15
Alt textShare of the product's images that carry alt text in the catalogue.15
  • A product whose value cannot be read is left out of that rule, not counted as zero. A rule that cannot be measured on any product is left out of the total, and the other weights are scaled to 100.
  • WooCommerce does not publish image sizes; the size is read from the image sizes the store lists for each image (srcset). Where that list does not give the size, resolution and aspect ratio are not measured for that product.
  • Backgrounds are measured in your browser from the store's image server. Where the server does not allow it, the background is not measured.
  • Whether a product has on-model or lifestyle images is not scored: only the first image of each product is read. The suggestion of Virtual try-on for clothing comes from words in the product type, tags and title.
  • A fix's points are what the total gains if every product reached the full score on that rule, with the other rules unchanged.
How to use it

Three steps, one store.

  1. 1

    Enter the store address

Type the store's address, for example yourstore.com. A product or collection link works too; the audit uses the store's address.

  2. 2

    Wait for the measurement

The catalogue is read and the first image of each product is measured. A store with a few hundred products takes under a minute.

  3. 3

    Apply the fixes

Start with the three fixes listed first, then work through the weakest products. Each fix button opens the matching tool in the Herofab app.

Next step

Fix what the audit finds, in Herofab.

Product studio places a product on a studio white background, Upscale doubles or quadruples the resolution, Extend frame changes the aspect ratio without cropping and Virtual try-on adds on-model images of clothing. Each fix in the report opens the matching tool.

Questions

About this tool.

Which stores can be audited?

Shopify stores and WooCommerce stores whose product catalogue is public: Shopify's products.json and the WooCommerce Store API. Password-protected stores, stores that block these addresses and other platforms cannot be read.

Does the audit change anything in my store?

No. It only reads the public catalogue that any visitor's browser can read, and the first image of each product as a small copy. Nothing is written to the store and no login is needed.

How many products are audited?

Up to 250. A larger store is audited on the first 250 products of its catalogue, and the report says so.

Why is a rule marked as not measured?

Because the value could not be read: WooCommerce stores often do not publish image sizes, and some image servers do not let the browser read pixels. Such a product is left out of that rule instead of being counted as zero.

Why does a plain grey background score half?

Marketplaces such as Amazon and Google Shopping ask for a white main image, so white scores the full point. A plain background of another colour keeps the grid tidy but does not meet those rules, so it scores half.

Is the result stored?

The catalogue read is kept for 24 hours so that the same store is not read again; an audit of the same store within that time shows the kept result and its date. Your IP address is not stored; a one-way hash of it counts audits per hour.

How often can I run an audit?

The first audit runs without an account; a free account is needed from the second. One internet connection can run up to 10 audits per hour.
