White background, done right.

Many marketplaces want the first photo on white. Here is what that means in practice, in four points.

1. Why white

The main photo appears next to dozens of others in search results. A white background makes every product comparable and keeps the eye on the item — which is why many marketplaces ask for it on the first image.

2. Pure white, not almost white

White is a number: RGB 255, 255, 255 (#FFFFFF). Studio light and camera processing often leave a background at 245 or 250 — it looks white on screen, but not to a marketplace that measures it. The free white background checker shows which one you have.

3. No shadow on the first photo

Several marketplaces ask for no visible shadow on the main image. A shadow-free first photo is the safe choice; soft shadows and styled scenes suit the images that follow.

4. Let the product fill the frame

Leave only a slim margin: marketplace rules range from about three quarters of the image to nearly all of it. Crop close, keep the whole product in view, and never cut an edge off.

Checklist

  • Background at exactly #FFFFFF
  • No visible shadow on the first photo
  • The whole product in frame, cropped close
  • No text, logo or watermark added
Questions

In short.

Is light grey accepted instead of white?

Some marketplaces accept a light, neutral background, especially for model photos; others require white on the first image. Check the marketplace's page before you choose.

Can I fix a grey background after the shoot?

Yes. Removing the background and placing the product on pure white is faster than a reshoot, and gives every product the same white.
