A swimsuit as a product, with no one in the frame.

Some catalogues show swimwear without a person at all, and a one-piece swimsuit suits that treatment. Herofab turns a flat photo of the suit into a hollow form or a flat lay against a plain backdrop, presented plainly as a product: outline, straps, fabric and print.

Worth knowing

What a swimsuit shows without a wearer.

  1. 1

    Neckline, leg line and back

The outline is the specification: how deep the front scoops, how high the leg is cut, how low the back sits. In a hollow image the leg openings and the neckline are open edges. Compare each curve with the suit laid beside the screen, and check that the two leg openings match.

  2. 2

    Straps and their fixings

Fixed, adjustable, crossed or tied behind the neck, straps are narrow and hold the shape of the top edge. Herofab is briefed to keep them with their sliders and rings. Confirm both are present and equally wide, and that they meet the back where the garment joins them.

  3. 3

    Lining, cups and fabric

The inside of a swimsuit differs from its outside: a pale lining, a shelf layer, sewn-in cups. Open edges in the 3D style can show a little of it, rendered by the tool. Check that the lining stayed inside, and that a ribbed, shiny or printed fabric kept its surface.

Laying out a swimsuit for the source photo.

  • Lay the swimsuit face up on a plain surface that contrasts with it, at its resting size, without stretching the sides or the leg openings.
  • Extend the straps upward to their full length and keep them parallel; crossed straps belong in the back photo, laid as they are worn.
  • Smooth the front so cups or a shelf lining leave no ridges, remove hygiene stickers and swing tags, and add a close-up of a ring, a clasp or a small logo.
Questions

Ghost mannequin for swimwear, answered.

Why show a swimsuit without a model?

A hollow-body or flat-lay image presents the suit as an object: its colour, cut and print with nothing else in the frame. It suits catalogues that keep product images free of people. The source is a flat-lay or hanger photo, no mannequin is needed for the shoot, and the backdrop is white, grey, black or beige.

How are padded cups shown in a hollow swimsuit?

Shape is briefed to be kept as photographed, so cups that are seated evenly in the source give the top of the suit its form. Removable pads that have slipped or folded leave ridges that the tool can read as seams. Set them in place, smooth the front and compare the bust area with the garment.

Is the flat-lay style closer to the real size of the suit?

Neither style is a measurement. The flat lay keeps the suit at its resting width, which is how it comes out of the parcel; the 3D shape fills it out as the tool reads it. Stretch fabric is smaller at rest than in wear, so keep the size chart in the listing either way.
