Swimwear on a model, shown plainly as a product.

Swimwear is small, stretchy and hard to read on a table, which is why buyers look for it worn. Herofab dresses a studio model in the piece from a flat photo and presents it as a product image: cut, straps, colour and print, and nothing staged around them.

Worth knowing

What a swimwear image has to get right.

  1. 1

    Cut lines

The height of the leg, the depth of the neckline, the width of the side and the coverage at the back are the product. They are read from the outline of the piece in the photo, so it must lie flat and unstretched. Go round every edge of the result with the real garment in hand.

  2. 2

    Straps, ties and hardware

Adjustable sliders, rings, a clasp at the back, halter ties or a cross-back: thin straps are easy to simplify. Herofab is briefed to keep hardware and shape. Trace every strap on the delivered image from where it starts to where it ends, and see that rings and sliders kept their colour.

  3. 3

    Print, lining and texture

Swim fabric often carries a dense print, a ribbed or crinkle texture, and a lining in another colour. A print is carried over where it can be matched and redrawn where it cannot, so compare its scale and placement. The lining belongs inside and should not appear on the outside.

Source photo

Photographing swimwear as a source photo.

  • Lay the piece flat on a plain surface in a contrasting colour, with straps spread out to their full length and not crossing the body of the garment.
  • Fasten clasps and tie the ties as they are worn; removable pads should be in place so that the cups keep their shape.
  • Take the piece out of its bag and off its card, since a product still in its packaging is flagged at upload, and photograph the back too when it carries the design.
Questions

Virtual try-on for swimwear, answered.

Does a low or cross-back swimsuit need a back photo?

Yes, when the back carries the design. The back view is drawn from a photo of the back, so turn the piece over, lay it flat with the straps spread, and upload that photo too. Without it, a cross-back, a keyhole or a low scoop is not in the source, and what is not in the source cannot be reproduced faithfully.

Can swimwear be shown at the seaside?

Studio white keeps the image a plain product shot. For a further image, the outdoor locations include seaside rocks and a wooden pier, with the scene's own light, morning, golden hour or overcast. Compare the colour of the fabric between backgrounds, as warm light can shift a bright shade.

Is the fit on the model a guide to sizing?

No. The size chosen guides how the piece is drawn on the model; it does not measure how stretch fabric sits on a real body. Keep the size chart and the fabric composition in the listing text, and choose a model body type, slim, average, curvy or plus, that reflects the range you sell.
