A penny strap has a cut-out slot; tassels hang from a bow of leather lace; a horsebit is a bar of metal linked across the saddle. Whichever the pair has is briefed to stay as photographed. Compare the slot, the number of tassels and the metal finish on each shoe with the pair. 2. ### Apron stitching on the vamp The seam that runs round the toe like a raised ridge is the mark of moccasin construction. It should follow the same line on the left and the right shoe, stay raised instead of being drawn flat, and stop where it does on the product. Hand-sewn stitches are small and regular, so view them at full size. 3. ### Heel, sole edge and ankle A loafer has a low, broad heel and a visible sole edge, both seen from the side. Above the topline comes skin or sock, then the hem. See that the heel has not grown, that the welt colour matches the pair, and that the trouser hem ends above the shoe instead of covering the strap. ## Photographing loafers as a pair. - Stand both loafers on a plain surface, one angled so the vamp is seen from the front and above, the other turned to its outer side for the heel and the sole edge. - Put shoe trees or rolled paper inside so the vamp is smooth; a collapsed instep creases the strap and hides the apron seam. - Polish smooth leather and brush suede first, lay the tassels flat on the vamp, and add a close-up of the metal bit or an embossed stamp. ## Virtual try-on for loafers, answered. **Are loafers shown with socks or a bare ankle?** The frame runs from the knee to the ground, so the ankle is part of the picture. Whether the delivered image shows a sock, a bare ankle or a hem that reaches the shoe changes how formal the pair reads.
