# Coats on a model, from one photo.

A coat is the longest and heaviest piece in most collections, and the hardest to photograph well on a rail. Herofab dresses a studio model in it from a single hanger photo, with the cloth, the collar, the buttons and the belt briefed to stay as they are.

## What a coat photo has to carry.

1. ### Length and proportion

Whether a coat ends at the thigh, the knee or the calf is the first thing a buyer wants to know. Compare the hem on the model with the coat's real length class; the fit follows the size chosen and illustrates the cut without measuring it.
2. ### Collar, lapels and front closure

Notch lapel, funnel neck, shawl or hooded: the collar and its stand frame the face. On a double-breasted front, count both button rows and see that the wrap direction is unchanged; on a trench, look for the storm flap, the epaulettes and the cuff straps.
3. ### Belt, vents and lining

A belt should pass through its loops and keep its buckle. Back vents and a centre pleat only appear in a back view, and the lining shows only where the front opens, so what the source photo reveals of them is all the image has to work from.

## Photographing a coat for try-on.

- Hang the coat high enough that the hem clears the floor, step back until collar and hem are both in the frame, and hold the phone at chest height.
- Fasten the buttons, thread the belt through its loops and tie or buckle it; a belt left dangling to one side reads as a loose strap.
- Photograph the back as well when it has a vent, a half-belt or a pleat, and add a close-up of textured cloth such as herringbone or bouclé.

## Virtual try-on for coats, answered.

**Does a calf-length coat fit into one image?**

Start with the source: the whole coat, hem included, has to be in the photo, because a part outside the frame cannot be added back faithfully. Then pick a portrait aspect ratio and a standing pose. Sitting and close-up poses suit additional images, not the one that has to show the length.

**Can the lining be seen when the coat is worn open?**

Only as far as the photo shows it. A coat photographed closed offers no view of the lining, and what is hidden cannot be reproduced faithfully. If a contrast or printed lining is a selling point, hang the coat open with the fronts spread and add a detail close-up of the lining.

**Which backgrounds suit outerwear?**

Studio white and studio grey keep a listing consistent with the rest of a catalogue. For a seasonal image there are outdoor locations such as a city street or a garden, with overcast or morning light among the options. The coat is briefed to remain the same garment in every setting.

**How much does it cost?**

5 credits per image, plus one credit for 4K. The cost is shown before you generate, and if a job fails the credits are returned. The 20 free credits at sign-up cover 4 images with this tool.
