# A square image, with the whole product in it.

Listings, category grids and thumbnails often expect a square, and a tall photo of a dress or a wide photo of a pair of boots is not one. Extend frame fills the missing sides with more of the same scene. The original pixels go back on top, so the product is the one that was photographed.

## What changes when an image becomes square.

1. ### Cropping versus extending

A square cut from a portrait image loses the hem of a dress or the top of a head; a square cut from a landscape one loses a toe or a heel. Extending keeps the full image and adds scene to its short sides. The product ends up smaller in the frame than in a crop, and complete.
2. ### A grid that lines up

A category page reads as tidy when every tile has one shape and the products sit at a similar size. Extending a mixed set of portrait and landscape images to squares gives the shape. The size of each product depends on how tightly its source was framed, so compare the tiles side by side.
3. ### The join on studio and scene images

On a plain white or grey studio background the added area is more background, and the join is hard to find. On a floor, a wall with a shadow or an outdoor scene, follow the border of the original image and look for a change of tone, a broken floor line or a shadow that stops short.

## The image to start from for a square.

- Use the uncropped original, not a version already trimmed for another channel; the more of the surroundings it shows, the less has to be generated.
- Check that the product is complete inside the frame: a sleeve, a strap or a sole cut off by the border is not restored by making the image square.
- Keep the background plain where the product allows it, since an even surface continues into the new area more quietly than a patterned floor.

## Square product images, answered.

**Why not simply crop my photo to a square?**

A crop works when there is spare background around the product. When the product fills the height of a portrait image or the width of a landscape one, a square crop cuts into it. Extending adds scene where the square needs it and leaves the product whole.

**Is the product regenerated when the image is made square?**

The product area is not regenerated: only the added scene is new, and the source pixels are laid over it again. The square is delivered in 2K, or 4K as an option, and can then be downloaded in marketplace sizes without cropping.

**Can an image made with another Herofab tool be made square?**

Yes. Extend frame takes any product or on-model image, including one delivered by try-on, Ghost mannequin or the product studio, and a delivered image can be sent straight to the next tool. If the image is square already, nothing is generated and the credits are returned.

**How much does it cost?**

2 credits per image, plus one credit for 4K. The cost is shown before you generate, and if a job fails the credits are returned. The 20 free credits at sign-up cover 10 images with this tool.
