# Shopify product images, one ratio across the store.

Shopify's guidance on product media concerns display: a square size that usually displays well, limits on dimensions and file weight, and one aspect ratio for all featured images. Herofab's product studio places a product in a studio or styled scene and delivers a collection's images at one size, so product pages stay even.

## Where a Shopify storefront stays even.

1. ### One aspect ratio for featured images

Shopify advises a single aspect ratio for all featured images, so that they display at the same size. Decide the ratio once, square, portrait or landscape, and hold to it for every product in the store. Downloaded for Shopify, each image comes out as a square of the same size, which keeps the rows of a collection page level.
2. ### The square Shopify recommends

Shopify names a square size that usually displays well for square product images, and sets an upper limit on pixel dimensions and on megapixels. The Shopify option at download is that recommended square, made from the delivered image without cropping the product. An image prepared elsewhere can be tested against the upper limits first.
3. ### Formats and file weight

PNG and JPEG are the formats Shopify calls the most suitable, although it accepts several others, and every file has to stay under a ceiling for its weight. Before a batch goes into the store, the free image size checker reads each file in the browser and tests it against Shopify's published figures; nothing leaves the computer.

## Source photos for an even product grid.

- Photograph every product of a collection from the same height and angle; with one viewpoint and one aspect ratio, the featured images line up in the grid of the store.
- Leave even space above, below and beside the product, so it can stand in the middle of a square scene without its top or base touching the edge.
- One clear photo is enough; add a detail close-up for small parts such as an engraved cap, a watch dial or a printed label.

## Product photos for Shopify, answered.

**Which size should a Shopify product image have?**

Shopify says one particular square size usually displays well for square product images; the figures are in the table on this page. Once an image is delivered, Shopify can be picked from the marketplace sizes, and the file is then made in that recommended square from the delivered image, with the product left whole.

**Can scene images and plain studio images share one store?**

Yes, and both come from one source photo. The product studio offers studio white, grey or beige, marble, wood, linen, a podium, outdoor and home settings, or a background image of the store's own. What Shopify asks to keep constant is the aspect ratio of the featured images, so a store can keep one ground for those and use scenes for the further media of each product.

**How are colourways shown without another shoot?**

Herofab's Colour variants tool shows each colourway from one product photo, and a delivered image can be sent straight on to the next tool. Keep the ratio and the scene the same for every colour, so that the variant images differ in colour alone. Each one should be compared with the real item, because the colour on the product page is the colour a customer orders.

**How much does it cost?**

4 credits per image, plus one credit for 4K. The cost is shown before you generate, and if a job fails the credits are returned. The 20 free credits at sign-up cover 5 images with this tool.
