# Hat photography, with the crown held up.

A hat is shaped to sit on a head, and off it the crown sinks and the brim tilts. Product studio shows headwear alone, without a model: a phone photo of a cap, a beanie, a fedora or a sun hat, with headwear chosen as the product kind, placed on a studio ground or in a scene. The shape in the image is the shape in the photo.

## What gives a hat its shape in an image.

1. ### A crown that stands

The image follows the photo, so a collapsed crown stays collapsed. Stuffing fills it out: tissue or a small towel behind the front panels of a cap, a rolled scarf inside a beanie, a bowl under a soft bucket hat. On the result, look at the crown from the front: the pinch of a fedora or the panels of a cap should be even on both sides.
2. ### Brim and peak

The brim is the outline a buyer notices first: flat or curved on a cap, level or snapped down on a fedora, wide and wavy on a sun hat. Its edge is thin and may be bound, stitched or raw straw. Follow it all the way round on the result, looking for one clean, continuous line and for rows of stitching that run parallel.
3. ### Labels, patches and embroidery

A front patch, an embroidered logo, a woven side label and the lettering on a strap closure are the brand of a cap. Embroidery has raised thread and small letters, and belongs to the details to read first. Compare letter shapes and thread colours with the hat itself, and add a detail close-up of the embroidery to the upload.

## Photographing a hat without a head.

- Stuff the crown until it holds its worn shape, set the hat on a plain surface, and make sure none of the filling shows below the brim or through a mesh back.
- For a cap, photograph the side with the peak pointing left or right, at the height of the crown; that profile shows the curve of the peak and the depth of the cap.
- For a brimmed hat, shoot once from the front and once from directly above, where the full circle of the brim and the crease of the crown are recorded.

## Product photography for hats, answered.

**Which angle suits a cap, and which a brimmed hat?**

A cap reads from the side and from three-quarter: the profile shows the peak and the crown height, and three-quarter adds the front logo. A brimmed hat reads from the front and from above, where top-down shows the brim as a full circle around the crown. Each angle is built on a photo taken from about that direction.

**Can the hat be photographed on a head form or a stand?**

Objects around the product, such as a table or a hand, are not a problem, since the tool is briefed to use only the product. A stand or a head form fills the crown well, yet it also covers the inside and the lower edge of the hat. Stuffing that stays inside the crown gives the same shape and leaves the whole hat visible.

**Where should a hat be placed: studio, wood or outdoors?**

A studio ground, white, grey or beige, gives the catalogue image, with a soft shadow under the brim. Wood and linen suit felt, wool and straw; outdoors suits sun hats and sports caps. For a hat worn by a studio model, virtual try-on takes headwear as a product. A delivered image can be sent straight to the next tool.

**How much does it cost?**

4 credits per image, plus one credit for 4K. The cost is shown before you generate, and if a job fails the credits are returned. The 20 free credits at sign-up cover 5 images with this tool.
