# A black backdrop, for garments that are light.

Black is one of the backdrops of Herofab's ghost mannequin tool, beside white, grey and beige. On black, a white, cream, pastel or neon garment separates sharply from its ground, and its outline is drawn by contrast alone. A dark garment does the opposite and sinks into it.

## What black does to the outline of a garment.

1. ### White, cream and pastel

Light garments have the least contrast on a white ground and the most on a black one. Off-white knitwear, a cream blouse, a pale pink or mint dress: every edge, from collar point to hem, stands against the dark. Inspect those edges at full size, since strong contrast also makes a rough or haloed outline easy to see.
2. ### Lace, mesh and open weaves

Wherever the fabric is open, the backdrop is seen through it. On black, the pattern of white lace, a crochet knit, broderie anglaise or a mesh panel is drawn light on dark and reads clearly. See-through fabric and fine edges are the parts to inspect first: each opening should be open, with no thread thickened or lost.
3. ### Dark garments lose their edge

Black, navy, charcoal and deep brown garments merge with a black backdrop: the outline, the folds and the pocket lines fade together. For those, white, grey or beige is the practical choice. In a range with both light and dark colourways, a middle tone such as grey holds all of them, where black would serve only the light half.

## The source photo for a black backdrop.

- Photograph a light garment against a wall or surface that differs from it in tone, so its outline is already clear in the source photo.
- Brush off lint and loose threads before the photo; dark specks on pale cloth and stray fibres along an edge are easy to see against black.
- With lace, mesh or crochet, keep the sleeves and any sheer panel clear of the body of the garment, so the open areas are not backed by another layer.

## Ghost mannequin on a black background, answered.

**Which garment colours suit a black backdrop?**

Light and saturated ones: white, cream, ivory, pastels, neon yellow, neon pink, bright red. Mid-tones such as denim blue or olive remain readable and lose some separation. Black, navy and other deep shades are better placed on white, grey or beige, where their outline is visible.

**Can one garment be delivered on black and on a light backdrop?**

Yes. Black, white, grey and beige are options of the same tool, selected each time an image is made. A cream knit can therefore have a black version for a darker-themed shop page and a lighter version for a catalogue grid, both from one source photo. Keep the style and the view identical so the two differ in backdrop alone.

**Does the hollow neck opening still read on black?**

In a 3D hollow-body image the neck opening shows the inside back of the garment. On a light garment that inside is light as well, so the opening stays distinct from the black around the piece. The areas to check are the rim of the neckline and the ends of the sleeves, where the inner shading meets the backdrop and the edge should remain clean.

**How much does it cost?**

4 credits per image, plus one credit for 4K. The cost is shown before you generate, and if a job fails the credits are returned. The 20 free credits at sign-up cover 5 images with this tool.
