# Jewelry details, prong by prong.

A buyer of jewelry looks at how the stone is held and how the piece fastens. Herofab frames the stone setting or the clasp as a close-up from a product photo or a delivered image, with the brief to keep the prongs, the links and the metal as the source has them.

## What a jewelry close-up puts under the loupe.

1. ### Prongs, bezels and pavé rows

Stone setting is its own entry in the detail list. A claw setting has a fixed number of prongs, a bezel a continuous rim, a pavé band rows of small stones held by beads of metal. Count the prongs and the stones in each row against the piece, and see that the cut of the centre stone, round, oval or emerald, is the one photographed.
2. ### Clasp, jump ring and links

The clasp entry shows how a chain or a bracelet closes: a lobster clasp, a spring ring, a toggle, a box clasp with its safety catch. Next to it sit the jump ring and the first links. Follow the link pattern, cable, curb or rope, through the frame and compare it with the chain; links are small, alike and easy to fuse.
3. ### Hallmarks and polished metal

A hallmark or a maker's mark inside a band or on a tag is small lettering, the detail to read first and to compare character by character with the piece. Polished metal mirrors its surroundings, so the highlights of the close-up come from the source. A dark shape across the band is usually the phone, reflected.

## A source photo sharp enough for a setting.

- Photograph the piece from as near as the phone will focus, on a plain matt surface, until the prongs or the links can be told apart in the photo itself.
- Turn the part that matters to the lens: the head of the ring for a setting, the closed clasp laid beside the pendant, the inside of the band for a hallmark.
- Use shade or window light with the flash off, and steady the phone on a book or a glass, since the slightest movement blurs detail at this scale.

## Detail shots for jewelry, answered.

**How close does my photo need to be for a setting close-up?**

Close enough that each prong and each small stone is already distinct in the source. A ring photographed small in the middle of a wide frame gives the close-up little to work from, and a part too small to make out cannot be reproduced faithfully. Fill the frame with the piece and keep the setting in focus.

**Can a hallmark or an engraving be shown as a detail?**

Only when the source shows it large and legible. A stamp inside a band or on the tag beside the clasp is among the smallest lettering on any product; for a mark on that tag, choose the clasp entry. Photograph the mark facing the lens and read the result character by character against the piece, since worn or shallow stamps are the first thing to come out altered.

**Do gemstone colour and sparkle stay true in a close-up?**

The stones are briefed to stay as the source shows them, colour and cut included. Sparkle is light caught by facets at the moment of the photo, so a flash-lit source gives white, burnt facets and a shaded one gives depth. Compare the stone colour with the piece in daylight, and do not treat the close-up as a statement of clarity or grade.

**How much does it cost?**

3 credits per image, plus one credit for 4K. The cost is shown before you generate, and if a job fails the credits are returned. The 20 free credits at sign-up cover 6 images with this tool.
