# Neutral background

A plain background in a quiet, light tone such as white, off-white, light grey or beige, without pattern or scene. Many marketplaces ask for it where they do not insist on pure white.

Neutral means that the background has no colour of its own to compete with the product and nothing in it to look at. It is a wider category than pure white: a pale grey wall, a sheet of beige paper or an evenly lit studio sweep all qualify, while a patterned cloth or a busy room does not.

Marketplace rules use the term in two ways. Some require pure white for the main image and say so in exact values. Others ask only for a light, neutral ground, which leaves room for grey or beige and suits white products better, because a white product on white loses its outline.

The choice is made per channel and then held: one neutral tone across a collection lets shoppers compare products instead of backgrounds. Where one image has to serve several marketplaces, the strictest rule decides, and that is usually pure white for the main image.

## Neutral background, answered.

**Is grey or beige the better neutral background for product photos?**

It depends on the colours of the products. Grey is cool and suits steel, silver, black and strong colours; beige is warm and suits leather, gold, wood and earth tones, and both give a white product a visible edge. **How do I get a neutral background when photographing at home?**

Use a plain, light surface without pattern, such as a smooth wall, a sheet of paper or an ironed cloth, and light it evenly. Daylight from a window without direct sun avoids hard shadows and the yellow cast of indoor lamps, which turns a white ground cream. Creases, skirting boards and the edge of a table are what most often give a home background away.
