# Megapixel

One million pixels. The megapixel count of an image is its width multiplied by its height, and some marketplaces cap it.

Also called **megapixels** · **MP** · **pixel count**

Megapixels measure the total number of pixels, not the shape. A long, narrow banner and a square can have the same count. Cameras are sold by this number, and a current phone records far more pixels than a product page ever displays.

A few marketplaces limit uploads by megapixels in addition to, or instead of, a maximum width and height. A photo straight from a phone can exceed such a limit, and so can a heavily upscaled image. The remedy is to export at smaller dimensions; the marketplace would scale the picture down anyway.

More megapixels do not mean a better product image. Sharp focus, even light and a product that fills the frame matter more, and beyond the size at which zoom works the extra pixels only add weight to the file.

## Megapixel, answered.

**How many megapixels does a product photo need?**

Far fewer than a current phone records. What a listing needs is a width and height that meet the marketplace's minimum and allow zoom, and the megapixel count simply follows from those two figures. A camera with a higher count gives more room to crop, not a better image on the product page.

**Are megapixels and megabytes the same thing?**

No. Megapixels count the pixels in an image; megabytes measure how much storage the saved file takes. Two images with the same megapixel count can differ widely in megabytes, depending on the format and on how strongly the file is compressed. A marketplace may limit either one or both, so a file can pass one limit and fail the other.

## What marketplaces say about it.
